Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh

President of the United States (1829–1837). Based in frontier

Tennessee, Jackson was a politician and army general who defeated

the Creek Indians at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (1814), and the

British at the Battle of New Orleans (1815). A polarizing figure who

dominated the Second Party System in the 1820s and 1830s, as

president he destroyed the national bank and relocated most Indian

tribes from the Southeast to west of the Mississippi River. His

enthusiastic followers created the modernDemocratic Party. The

1830-1850 period later became known as the era of

Jacksonian democracy.^[1]

Jackson was nicknamed "Old Hickory" because of his toughness and

aggressive personality; he fought in duels, some fatal to his

opponents.^[2] He was a rich slaveholder, who appealed to the

common men of the United States, and fought politically against what

he denounced as a closed, undemocratic aristocracy. He expanded

the spoils system during his presidency to strengthen his political

base.

Elected president in 1828, Jackson supported a small and limited

federal government. He strengthened the power of the presidency,

which he saw as spokesman for the entire population, as opposed to

Congressmen from a specific small district. He was supportive of

states' rights, but during the Nullification Crisis, declared that states

do not have the right to nullify federal laws. Strongly against the

national bank, he vetoed the renewal of its charter and ensured its

collapse. Whigs and moralists denounced his aggressive enforcement

of the Indian Removal Act, which resulted in the forced relocation of

thousands of Native American tribes to Indian Territory (now

Oklahoma). Historians acknowledge his protection of popular

democracy and individual liberty for United States citizens, and

sometimes criticize him for his support for slavery and for his role in

Indian removal.^[3][4]

Jackson was the only president to have been a prisoner of war. He was thirteen when he joined the South Carolina militia to fight in the Revolutionary War. After his capture, he was ordered to clean the boots of a British officer. Jackson refused. The officer then drew his sword and slashed Jackson across the forehead, leaving a scar.

Jackson was involved in many duels. A duel on May 30, 1806 against Charles Dickinson was over some unflattering remarks made about Jackson's wife. In this duel Jackson was wounded. After he was hit, he took aim and fired at Dickinson. Jackson's gun misfired. As Dickinson was forced to stand his ground, Jackson took aim once again and killed Dickinson. The bullet that wounded Jackson was lodged near his heart and could not be safely removed. He carried that bullet in his chest for the rest of his days.

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding, gnashing or clenching your teeth. The condition affects both children and adults.

Some people with bruxism unconsciously clench their teeth together during the day, often when they feel anxious or tense. This is different from tooth grinding or clenching that occurs at night, which is called sleep bruxism. Most children who are bruxers do so at night, while adults are either daytime or nighttime bruxers.

Bruxism may be mild and may not even require treatment. However, it can be frequent and severe enough to lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems. Unfortunately, people with sleep bruxism usually aren't aware of the habit, so they aren't diagnosed with the condition until complications occur. That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms of bruxism and to seek regular dental care.

Signs and symptoms of Bruxism

The signs and symptoms of bruxism may include:

Teeth grinding or clenching, which may be loud enough to wake your sleep partner
Teeth that are worn down, flattened or chipped
Worn tooth enamel, exposing the inside of your tooth

Jaw pain or tightness in your jaw muscles
Earache — because of severe jaw muscle contractions, not a problem with your ear
Headache
Chronic facial pain
Chewed tissue on the inside of your cheek

Causes of bruxism

Doctors don't completely understand the causes of bruxism. For daytime bruxism, it has been thought that abnormal alignment of upper and lower teeth (malocclusion) may contribute to the problem, though this hasn't been confirmed in research studies. Sleep bruxism is believed to be related to changes that occur during sleep cycles in some individuals, and this is an active area of current research.

In adults, psychological factors seem to be associated with bruxism, including:

Anxiety, stress or tension
Suppressed anger or frustration
Aggressive, competitive or hyperactive personality type

In children, bruxism may be related to growth and development of the jaws and teeth. Some researchers think children brux because their top and bottom teeth don't fit together comfortably as they are erupting. Others believe that children grind their teeth because of tension, anger, or as a response to pain from an earache or teething. While bruxism has been reported to occur in up to 30 percent of children, often in children under the age of 5, most children outgrow bruxism before they get their adult teeth.

In some cases, bruxism isn't caused by stress or dental problems. It can be a complication of another disorder, such as Huntington's disease or Parkinson's disease. It can also be an uncommon side effect of some psychiatric medications including certain antidepressants.

Risk factors for Bruxism

These factors increase your risk of bruxism:

Stress. Increased anxiety or stress can lead to teeth grinding. So can anger and frustration.
Age. Bruxism is common in young children, but usually goes away by adolescence.

When to seek medical advice for Bruxism

Bruxism often goes unnoticed. See your dentist if you have worn teeth or pain in your jaw, face or ear. Also consult your dentist if your bed partner complains that you make a grinding noise while you sleep.

Life Overview

John Quincy Adams ⁱ/ˈ k w ɪ n z i/ (July 11, 1767 – February 23, 1848) was the sixth President of the United States (1825–1829). He served as an American diplomat, Senator, and Congressional representative. He was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican, and later Anti-Masonic and Whig parties. Adams was the son of former President John Adams and Abigail Adams. As a diplomat, Adams played an important role in negotiating many international treaties, most notably the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. As Secretary of State, he negotiated with the United Kingdom over America's northern border with Canada, negotiated with Spain the annexation of Florida, and authored the Monroe Doctrine. Historians agree he was one of the greatest diplomats and secretaries of state in American history.^[2][3]

As president, he sought to modernize the American economy and promoted education. Adams enacted a part of his agenda and paid off much of the national debt.^[4] He was stymied by a Congress controlled by his enemies, and his lack of patronage networks helped politicians eager to undercut him. He lost his 1828 bid for re-election to Andrew Jackson. In doing so, he became the first President since his father to serve a single term.

Adams is best known as a diplomat who shaped America's foreign policy in line with his ardently nationalist commitment to America's republican values. More recently Howe (2007) portrayed Adams as the exemplar and moral leader in an era of modernization. During Adams' lifetime, technological innovations and new means of communication spread messages of religious revival, social reform, and party politics. Goods, money and people traveled more rapidly and efficiently than ever before.^[5]

Adams was elected a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts after leaving office, the only president ever to be so, serving for the last 17 years of his life with far greater success than he had achieved in the presidency. Animated by his growing revulsion against slavery,^[6] Adams became a leading opponent of the Slave Power. He correctly predicted that if a civil war were to break out, the president could abolish slavery by using his war powers; Abraham Lincoln did just that with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Adams also predicted the Union's dissolution over the slavery issue, but said that if the South became independent there would be a series of bloody slave revolts.^[7]

What are Provisionals?

Provisional crowns and bridges also called prototype or long term temporary crowns and bridges are used to test a change in the smile, bite or both for a patient. . This is standard practice when making significant changes to a patient’s smile or bite. We can change the color, size, position and shape of teeth. With provisionals, a patient has an opportunity to wear them for them weeks or months and determine if the new teeth look good, are comfortable and function properly during speech and eating. Patients can check with friends and family to make sure the new smile is great as well. We call this the “test drive”. Provisionals can be modified as needed during this trial time. Once the patient and dentist are satisfied, the provisionals, are used as a template for the final restorations.

How are Provisionals made?

Depending on the situation. there are a few different ways that provisionals can be made. The first method is where the dentist does a mock-up directly on the teeth with a tooth colored composite. This shows a patient the proposed changes immediately. A second method is to make models of the patient’s teeth and have the lab make the proposed changes in wax on the models and view them. Once approved, the lab creates plastic provisionals from the model to be cemented on the prepared teeth. One additional method is a variation where the new waxed model is used to create a form that is used by the dentist to fill with composite and bond over the teeth. In the end, the patient will be either wearing bonded on composite material, or cemented on plastic provisionals. If it is anticipated the provisionals will be in place for a long time, they can be made out of a special long lasting plastic or reinforced.

Provisional have many other uses and are quite versatile. They can be used to stabilize loose teeth while healing, and stabilize orthodontic appliances Provisional partials and dentures can be used during the healing phase after tooth removal and before the final denture or partial is made. In addition, provisional partials are an inexpensive alternative when the cost for a permanent partial is out of reach. The Snap-On-Smile is another category of provisional restoration that I discuss in other blogs. Provisionals can be replaced and are relatively inexpensive.

What Has Changed:

Employers, and employees alike are under siege. Housing costs have plummeted. Fuel and food prices are rising rapidly. People who are jobless or hurting are not able to buy more than the basics causing local businesses to struggle. Due to the poor economy, employers are looking for ways to reduce costs. They are dropping coverage and buying cheaper dental plans. Insurance companies are front loading their premiums now to cover future costs (known and unknown) from healthcare reform, and other acts of legislation.

For Patients:

Patients with falling or no wages are forced to pay more out of pocket for dental care, or change to network plans. Patients are making decisions based on whether they have “insurance coverage”, rather than need. Ultimately many needed procedures are not completed.

The Result:

Small problems become large problems including pain, swelling, infection, and possible loss of teeth. These problems are more expensive, and time consuming to treat. The treatment options may be too expensive at this point and additional tooth loss is not uncommon.

What I Am Seeing:

More patients call with emergency situations. Stress is causing people to clench and grind their teeth more which leads to many problems. Many patients are coming in with multiple problems and limited finances. I feel for these people and I always try to find a way to meet their needs.

The Net Effect:

Unfortunately, more people are opting for extractions and, temporary fixes. We are taking good care of our patients, while we are holding the line on fees and in many cases lowering them to make care more affordable. I am extremely creative finding solutions for patients that fit in their budget.

Life Overview

James Monroe (April 28, 1758 – July 4, 1831) was the fifth President of the United States (1817–1825). Monroe was the last president who was a Founding Father of the United States, and the last president from the Virginia dynasty and the Republican Generation.^[1] His presidency was marked both by an "Era of Good Feelings" – a period of relatively little partisan strife – and later by the Panic of 1819 and a fierce national debate over the admission of the Missouri Territory. Monroe is most noted for his proclamation of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, which stated that the United States would not tolerate further European intervention in the Americas.

Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Monroe fought in the American Revolutionary War. He was injured in the Battle of Trenton with a musket ball to his shoulder. After studying law under Thomas Jefferson from 1780 to 1783, he served as a delegate in the Continental Congress. As an anti-federalist delegate to the Virginia convention that considered ratification of the United States Constitution, Monroe opposed ratification, claiming it gave too much power to the central government. Nonetheless, Monroe took an active part in the new government and in 1790 he was elected to the Senate of the first United States Congress, where he joined the Jeffersonians. He gained experience as an executive as the Governor of Virginia and rose to national prominence when as a diplomat in France he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Monroe was of French and Scottish descent.

During the War of 1812, Monroe held the critical roles of Secretary of State and the Secretary of War under President James Madison. ^[2] Facing little opposition from the fractured Federalist Party, Monroe was easily elected president in 1816, winning over 80 percent of the electoral vote and becoming the last president during the First Party System era of American politics. As president, he sought to ease partisan tensions and embarked on a tour of the country and was well received everywhere.^{[citation needed]} As nationalism surged, partisan fury subsided and the "Era of Good Feelings" ensued until the Panic of 1819 struck and dispute over the admission of Missouri embroiled the country in 1820. Nonetheless, Monroe won near-unanimous reelection. In 1823, he announced the Monroe Doctrine, which became a landmark in American foreign policy. His presidency concluded the first period of American presidential history before the beginning of Jacksonian democracy and the Second Party System era. Following his retirement in 1825, Monroe was plagued by financial difficulties. He died in New York City on July 4, 1831.

Steve Jobs and Apple-Just a thought-Crystal Lake Dental Associates

Apple products will probably never run my office network, however I could envision a tablet device like the iPad being used as portable workstations.

I have watched with interest however Steve and his unusual style of creating and managing a business. Steve claimed to be a Zen Buddhist. I understand that Steve's Buddhist background helped shape his thinking about the products that he designed. He had a way of treating many people in terms of extremes. Steve often took credit for ideas that someone else came up with.. He could be brutal to the point of cruelty even to those very close to him. Steve was quick to complain about others who he felt were stealing people, jobs, and ideas. Steve he did not seem to mind doing the same when convenient. A a ruthless businessman, Steve was directly or indirectly responsible for hundreds of patents for himself, Apple , and other companies he was involved with. Steve was visionary, and yes a genius. He has created a world class business in Apple and over the years has had a hand in transforming several industries. In some ways geniuses seem to get a pass on bad behavior.

If Steve had been a Christian instead of Buddhist, could he and Apple Corp have been as successful?

How would they have been different? Apple did get involved in and donated funds to (product) RED an organization promoted by Bono for fighting diseases in Africa. According to Bono, Apple is the largest contributor to this organization through the sale of special red U2 iPods. Had he been a Christian, Steve would have devoted time to church, bible reading, and with his extensive wealth money to his church and possibly other faith related organizations. He may have gotten caught up in missions work or serving the poor. I disregard the idea that he could not have discovered similar computer related concepts as a Christian.

It is business, but it is also personal...It's about people, and relationships and how you treat them.

A business must remain profitable in order to survive and flourish. Its leadership has to make tough decisions in order to navigate the unknown and create the future. The treatment of coworkers, competitors, and business partners would certainly have been different for a Christian business leader. You can make tough decisions and be kind in the process. You can suggest changes and be considerate at the same time. You can get your point across without swearing or belittling people. You can have great core values and live them out. You can be inspiring without being a dictator. You can listen to opposition views without treating the other like dirt. You should be compassionate about people who can no longer stay in the company. People are not objects to be used and discarded like the trash. If you lose out to a competitor, you should salute them for their skill rather that badmouth them at every turn.

I think Steve Jobs and Apple could have been just as successful run as a Christian organization. I never met Steve, but would have liked to have met him in heaven.

Lady Gaga is well known for her outrageous fashion statements, from wearing a telephone on her head to THAT meat dress, Gaga has certainly made an impression on the fashion world. Her latest crazy idea comes in the form of teeth jewellery. The outlandish singer, who recently collaborated with veteran Tony Bennett on ‘The Lady is a Tramp’, reportedly had diamond implants fitted onto her teeth. Dutch designer Otazu confirmed that Lady Gaga was fitted with marquise diamonds for her appearance in Paris Fashion Week where she is collaborating with French fashion house, Thierry Mugler

This is not the first time that Lady Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, has had cosmetic dentistry. Back in 2009 the pop star caused a stir by wearing vampire fangs. Diamond implants may prove trickier to live with however. It is reported that rapper Lil Wayne who has similar dental jewellery cannot eat anything solid!

The cost of the diamond tooth implants is not known, although sources close to the star have suggested that her jewellery bill was likely to have been as much as her dental one. The expense is unlikely to have been a concern to Gaga however, who according to Forbes, earned $US 91.7 million in the last year alone.
