Fear of painful treatment

We treat every person with the same care we would treat a family member using every comfort available like blankets, pillows a soft touch, spa hand treatments, in room TV, special comfortable anesthetics, advanced numbing procedures, topical pre-anesthetics, a gentle touch in all procedures, nitrous oxide (laughing Gas), oral premedication, and sedation medications, pain management prescriptions as needed.

Fear of pain after treatment

We routinely give pain management instructions for procedures where there might be discomfort afterwords. In addition we routinely prescribe additional medication if it is needed for pain and infection prevention as well as special antibiotics rinses.

Noise of the dental drill

Dr Neal uses special advanced low noise drills because they provide a superior result.

Negative past experiences

We see this a lot and we have seen thousands of patients who once had an extreme fear of the dentist and have overcome it after their positive experiences with our great team who understand how fear can devastate a person.

That the anesthetic won’t work

Dr Neal and his team have been able to to numb patients who claim they either cannot get numb or that they still feel some pain. Dr Neal has many tricks that other dentists have not figured out. He uses a special pre-anesthetic that takes the sting away and a special machine called (The Wand) to deliver anesthetic with virtually no feeling. Many patients claim they did not even know that he had been numbing them.

Dental instruments

Our treatment rooms are designed with a pleasant view of the area with a large screen TV to watch. Yes we have dental instruments, but Dr Neal and his team are trained to use loupes magnification and a gentle touch as well as liberal amounts of topical anesthetic and regular anesthetic to insure a comfortable visit. We also have Nitrous Oxide and sedation medications for the more fearful patient which can be used for any visit including a professional cleaning appointment.

Gag easily

Yes we see gaggers and we have successfully cared for them. We can use topical and other medications to eliminate the gag reflex. We have ways to alter our care to make gaggers very comfortable. we h use nitrous oxide and sedation for severe gaggers who require more extensive care with great success.

Afraid of being poked with a sharp object

We are all afraid of being poked with a sharp object. Our team is very aware of this and makes every effort to always insure that we will NEVER carelessly poke someone. We take all of the above mentioned precautions and take it to a higher level with a patient who has been hurt and has a HIGH fear of being hurt again.

Feelings of helplessness

We understand this fear and assure every patient that they are in charge of the visit. all patients are encouraged to raise their hand if at any time they want to stop, need to swallow, go to the bathroom, want to be more numb or for any other reason. The patient is in charge.

Embarrassment due to oral hygiene

We get this and we have so many patients who are so embarrassed by the condition of their teeth. We have seen just about anything you could imagine, and we will help you from where ever your are to the level of health you want and deserve.

Top five excuses Americans make to avoid or delay the dentist

It’s too expensive

We have many financial options and ways to help reduce your costs. Remember dentistry is not expensive.... neglect is.

Nothing hurts so there’s no need to go

Waiting till you have pain or swelling may seem to be smart, but often the damage done will be much more involved, time consuming and expensive.

My insurance may not cover it

Dental Insurance is a misnomer. It is a benefit that usually only covers a few basic procedures ( and less of them all the time). Every person's dental needs are unique to them and the solutions your dentist offers are the best for your situation. The dental insurance industry has a contract with your employer for a level of coverage based on how much you and your employer are willing to invest. Your insurance should never dictate the care need for your circumstance as they have no real interest in your dental health individually.Their first interest is in their shareholders and being as profitable as possible.

I can’t take time out of work

We are very aware that families have limited times that they can be available for dental care. Whether is because of work, school, after school activities, or other things, we get it. Because of this, we offer extended and evening hours. to

I have more important things to do

If you have a car, you know that regular oil changes, and inspections of tires, fluids and the like will insure that your car will not suffer a major very expensive, and inconvenient breakdown. The same goes in dentistry. We understand that today's pace of life is crazy. That is why we are committed to lifetime dentistry. The best dentistry is no dentistry at all. How do we do that? By being thorough and handling problems when they are small and less costly, as well as having regular maintenance to keep things in good order.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month.

Here area few tips to remember about your chldren's teeth

1) Brush and floss twice a day

If your child is under age 8, you should be asssting the child in this.

Infants should be using a very small amount of a non fluoridated children's toothpaste. At about age 2 you can use a fluoridated toothpase with a RICE sized amount of paste on the brush.when a child is able to spt, you can go to a PEA sized amount of toothpaste.

2) Watch the intakeof sweets especially between meals.

3) Never put a baby down witha bottle of liquid other than water.

4) Encourage children to develop other security methods than finger sucking and pacifiers when possible.

These objects in themouth for long periods of time will alter thes hape of the mouth considerably leading to malocclusions whtich can be very hard to correct.

5) As soon as the first tooth arrives, begin taking the child to the dentist to help cement a positive relationship and encourage proper nutrition and hygiene habits.

6) Children should see the dentist twice a year.

This tragedy is preventable.

This past weekend, our office served at a food packaging and distribution site called "Feed My Starving Children"

We at Crystal Lake Dental Associates are dedicated to serving our local community as well as the larger world community . As such, we have participated in a Free Dental Service day at our office, collecting for the Crystal Lake Food Bank Bank, and collecting Toys for Tots. We were looking for other ways to serve and one of our team members suggested doing a shift at Feed My Starving Children. I had never heard of this organization before, but we decided to get involved.

As I researched the organization, I became convinced that it was a great cause.

Last Friday, we served at a scheduled shift making up food packs and boxing them for shipment to Iraq. The entire shift was very well organized and our seven person team was able to box up almost seven hundred meals in a very short time. The time went very fast and the teamwork and enthusiasm was fantastic.

Feed My Starving Children is a wornderful organization. They are very good at being efficient and cost conscious. Their meals are designed for maximum nutrition for children. This organization ships food all over the world partnering with other humanitarian organizations.

If tis sounds like something you individually or with a group would like to get involved with, you can go to their website at WWW,fmsc.org and get details on either working a shift of food packing, or donating funds for the purchase and shipping of food wrldwide. you will be a blessing to starving childrel and will feel quite blessed for the opportunity to serve.

Have a wonderful day!

1) problem: Chipped, worn, broken, and loose teeth.

Causes: if you biteing on or chew hard objects like finger nails, ice, hard candy, bones, pens, pencils tongue and lip rings, or any metal object. In addition picking your teeth and gums with hard objects, as well as clenching or grinding your teeth. Trauma to teeth from sports and not wearing mouth guard.

Soution: Obviously do not put hard objects in your mouth (that is what dental professionals are for), also wear a mouthguard or biteplane if you are a clencher/grinder or are playing sports where you may be hit in the mouth.

2) problem: Cavities and abscessed teeth.

Causes: Eating or sucking on lots of sticky sweet items like jelly beans, raisins, taffy, any hard candies, sugar cough drops fro long periods.
Solution: These items should be eaten in small quantities and never parked in the cheek. Eating them at meal time can also be helpful. frequent brushing and flossing with fluoride will help.

3) Problem: Cavities and gum disease

Causes: A dry mouth from any medication that dries out your mouth, habitually breathing through your mouth due to nasal obstructions.
Solution: If your airway is restricted, chronically, a consultation with an ENT specialist is needed to correct that problem. If your are taking medications that dry the mouth (over 3,000 medications are known to do this), frequent drinking and rinsing with water of a hydrationg mouth rinse will help.

4) Problem: Acid eroding your enamel (dissolving your teeth)

1 Does Not Involve Neighboring Teeth
All other tooth replacement options involve either drilling on other teeth for fixed bridges and some removable partial dentures or using the other teeth for retention of removable appliances. Neighboring teeth may develop decay and fracture more easily or require root canal treatment in time.Dental Implants use a root shaped titanium screw that goes in the same area as the missing tooth root.

2 Stimulates Bone Development

Whenever a tooth is lost, the bone begins to shrink as it no longer is stimulated by the tooth root during chewing. In fact the bone is stimulated negatively by chewing as pressure causes bone resorption. This bone loss can cause an unsightly situation and make restoring the area more difficult. Dental implants stimulate the bone through chewing.

3 Very Strong

Dental implants are made from a Titanium allow and are extremely strong.

4 Keeps Teeth From Shifting

A restored dental implant is both a place holder and a working partner. This keeps teeth from shifting out of place which can lead to food trapping, cavities, and gum disease.

5 Helps Distribute Chewing Force

Most people have between 28 and 32 teeth that distribute chewing forces evenly through the mouth. The back teeth do the majority of the power chewing while the front teeth are more involved in tearing food, but the entire set of teeth work in harmony. When teeth are missing theirs creates problems in speech, esthetics and harmony of the biting and chewing of food. In addition, missing teeth can lead to muscle imbalance and TMJ problems

6 Non-allergenic Materials

Then titanium alloy implant, and Titanium alloy abutment, and Zirconium restorative materials we use contain no nickel or other allergenic materials.

7 Looks Natural

Properly placed dental implant crowns can be undetectable in your smile.

8 Cost Effective

Constant innovation and competition in the dental implant industry is helping to lower the cost of dental implants dramatically. Implant parts have come down in cost up to 800% in some cases allowing doctors to keep the cost down for the patient In addition, the innovations in implant design are shortening the treatment time and improving the result.
When I think of thanksgiving, my memories begin at my grandparents whitewashed brick home in he suburbs of Detroit. The traditional turkey, dressing, cranberry gel, mashed potatoes, gravy, and pumpkin pie were always there in abundance.. Somehow I always got a drumstick on my plate back then.

Thanksgiving celebrations actually have long and varied history. Below are 10 facts about thanksgiving feasts that may surprise you.

1) Thanksgiving feasts were not begun by the pilgrims of the Mayflower. Thanksgiving feasts are a tradition that goes back thousands of years. These celebrations were usually the result of celebrating the harvest or a military victory and would be declared by a governing body or group of people at various times of the year and often several times in the same year. these celebrations were celebrated in Europe, Africa, Middle East as well as in America by local native tribes before the pilgrims first celebration in 1621 Spanish explorers in the New World had celebrations 1500's.

2) The first Thanksgiving recorded at the Plymouth Plantation group from the Mayflower lasted 3 days and most of the participants were native Indians (56 colonists and 91 Indians). According to written records the Indian tribes of the area were instrumental in helping the pilgrims survive and have a good harvest.
Herbs, onions or nuts might have been added to the birds for extra flavor. Onions, beans, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, carrots and perhaps peas corn, blueberries, plums, grapes, gooseberries, raspberries may also have been at the table. Mussels, lobster, bass, clams and oysters might also have been part of the feast. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Dentists know a lot of candy will be eaten
over the coming weeks by people of all ages, so there’s no need to try to hide
it! Instead, here are some timely facts so that you can still enjoy the
Halloween season and all the sweets and treats that come along with it, just
with less guilt and hopefully, minimal damage to your teeth.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Best time to be sinful<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">: While anytime may be the preferred time to
eat candy, there’s a more strategic way to indulge without ruining your teeth.
Having candy at the end of a meal will lessen the chance of eating too much of
it. That’s also when your mouth has the most saliva going so it can help rinse
away some of the sugary residues from your teeth.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Risky candies<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">: Some sweets are less harmful to your teeth than
others, so before you dig into your candy mountain, remember that lollipops and
jawbreakers can chip teeth and take more time to dissolve, leaving sugar
coating your mouth for a longer time. Caramels, chewy candies and even dried
fruit can get stuck in between teeth and speed up tooth decay.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Liquid sugar threats<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">: Sugar isn’t just in candy, it’s also in
fruit juices, pop, and mixed alcohol-based drinks, so follow up your sweet
drink with water or chew sugar-free gum to neutralize sugar and acids.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">Clean up the crime
scene<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt;">: There is a right way
to care for your teeth after raiding the candy stash and it isn’t running to
the washroom to brush immediately. Because the process of eating softens tooth
enamel, it’s best to wait 30 minutes before giving your teeth a good brush and
floss to make sure all sugar and candy are removed from the surface and
crannies of your teeth.

Dental insurance can be confusing

1) know your policy maximums, inclusions, and exclusions

Every policy has a maximum annual allowance benefit. Lets
say it is$1,500 per year. That means the policy will pay out to a maximum of
$1,500 per year for dental care. If the policy is a PPO plan, this amount is
paid at a rate that is pre-determined through an agreement between the insurance
company and the doctor. In other words the fees the doctor charges you and the
plan are determined by the insurance company.

Dental insurance
plans are usually negotiated between an employer and the insurance
company. The employer is trying to get the best plan for a set premium (cost).
The premium of the plan determines what
procedures will be covered, For example
a lower premium plan may not cover braces, or dental implants, or have a lower annual maximum payment. It may
also not cover replacement of missing teeth that were lost prior to being
insured and so on. The patient may still have the procedures done, but the
insurance company will not be helping pay for it.

2) know your anniversary dates and waiting periods

Insurance plans usually reload on January 1, but your plan
may have a different anniversary date. Some plans have a waiting period for
more costly (major) services. If there
is one and you have a major service done before that date, it will not be paid
by insurance.

3) know which providers are in your plan.

Providers will either be in your network of out of your network. In network doctors are usually all reimbursed the
same for the same procedure. Out of network doctors are paid less and are
usually able to charge a higher rate for a procedure as they are not contracted
to charge the PPO fee. In our area very few specialists are signed up with any
of the PPO plans. If you are referred to a specialist, your PPO plan may not
apply.

In addition, there are some HMO type plans in existence, but
only a few doctors take them due to the extremely low reimbursement rate.

Health Benefits of Straight Teeth

You may be surprised to know that the benefits of having properly aligned teeth extend far beyond a confident smile. According to the American Dental Association, straightening your teeth can actually significantly affect your overall dental health.1 Think about it — a smile can hardly be perfect if it's not a healthy one. Fortunately, with Invisalign®, having a confident smile and reducing your risk for tooth decay and gum disease go hand in hand.

Healthier Teeth and Gums

Swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. That’s where Invisalign comes in. The comfortable and clear aligners gently and gradually begin to move your teeth into the proper position — without unsightly brackets and wires.

Easier Cleaning

One of the biggest challenges of having braces is removing all the food that gets trapped in the brackets and wires. This can often lead to plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing your teeth the way you normally do.

Overall Health

Think of your teeth as a window to the health of your body. Your teeth and gums — and how they look to others when you smile—say a lot about your overall health. If you're taking good care of both, you're probably taking good care of the rest of you.

Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss. Studies by the American Dental Association have shown that oral infections can also lead to other more serious ailments such as heart disease,2 stroke,3 pneumonia4 and diabetes.5 Invisalign aligners make daily oral hygiene easier, thus reducing the risk of possible problems. And correctly aligned teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. Invisalign effectively addresses all of these orthodontic issues, so you'll have the confidence of a great smile and increase the likelihood of improved oral health.
Reprint of original story in the Freso Bee

Julian started a fight at school today. The kids teased him again. He knew his teeth looked bad, and he talked funny. He knew he shouldn’t fight. However, today was the final teasing straw that broke the camel’s back and Julian took a swing.

You may think this is about bullying, but it is not. It concerns the unintended consequences of poor dental hygiene. We often think of oral health as not very important. However, it has far-reaching impacts we need to understand and prevent.

First, early breakdown of frontal teeth can prevent children from refining certain sounds in their speech.

Second, tooth decay can be very painful. The pain can make eating, sleeping and concentrating difficult.

Third, the physical appearance of tooth decay is a source of embarrassment and can make it difficult to form and maintain healthful social relationships.

Several common practices lead to tooth decay: giving bottles of milk or juice to babies as they fall asleep; not brushing and flossing or doing it incorrectly; drinking too many sugary beverages such as sodas and fruit drinks; and not seeing a dentist for cleaning and treatment.

We’ve all heard advertisements for dental care that tell us a healthy mouth is more than an attractive smile. The fact is, oral health is an issue of huge significance to our personal and public health. Not only is our mouth the portal to our digestive system, but it also serves a key role in our personal interactions and socialization and is a major point of introduction of infection and chronic inflammation.

Poor oral health, in the primary form of dental caries (tooth decay or cavities) in children, can affect our individual and collective well-being in an astounding variety of ways.

Dental caries is a communicable disease to which all ages are susceptible. Dental caries occur when bacteria residing in plaque, which has developed on tooth surfaces, convert carbohydrates to acidic by-products. The result is a lower local pH which causes, over extended periods, the leeching of important minerals from the tooth and subsequent collapse of the enamel substructure known as cavities.

Dental caries causes pain and discomfort that affects nutrition, communication, socialization and sleeping, all of which affect our overall health and well-being. Additionally, dental caries can result in absence from work and school, leading to reduced income and lower academic performance.

In children, particularly, caries can lead to psychological, learning and self-esteem difficulties that severely impact their social development. Finally, dental caries can lead to infection and abscess formation that can be life-threatening.

In adults, gum disease is associated with other chronic inflammation diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. In a recent study, individuals with serious gum disease were 40 percent more likely to have another chronic medical condition as well.

There is also a possible association between periodontitis and bacterial pneumonia, stroke, preterm birth and low birth weight, and pancreatic cancer.

The Fresno County Department of Public Health, Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission, and Reading and Beyond, are working together to provide youths in Fresno County with dental services. If you are on Medi-Cal and would like to schedule an initial or follow-up appointment for your child, please call 844-421-3484. Services are available throughout Fresno County.

As your Fresno County health officer, I urge you to protect your health and well-being by:

▪ Brushing at least twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

▪ Flossing at least once a day.

▪ Reducing your consumption of sugary drinks.

As a Caregiver, you may have to assist or even take a hands-on approach to dental care. It’s important to point out that when caring for someone’s overall health, their dental health is often just as critical. Preventing infections, dental pain, and other oral complications can help to improve or maintain a person’s quality of life.

For those with their natural teeth, it is ideal to brush twice daily (or at least once a day) using a soft bristled toothbrush. If a person is unable to brush on his or her own, a power toothbrush may be a helpful tool in many cases – though it will likely take some practice when you start using it on someone else! If the person is able to spit after brushing,

Fluoride toothpaste is a great choice. For individuals with swallowing problems (or those unable to spit), brushing with water is also an option.

Flossing (or using other interdental tools) to clean between the teeth every day cleans where a toothbrush can’t reach and is extremely important in preventing decay.

Visually examining the teeth and gums and soft tissues once a week can catch potentially serious problems early.

Using a disposable dental mirror* and penlight, examine soft tissues of the mouth for sores red or white spots on the gums, cheek, palate, and tongue. Red or white areas in the mouth that do not clear up should be seen referred to your dentist for evaluation.

Reasons to replace missing teeth include:

1) Your jaw bone around a missing tooth deteriorates causing receeding gums
2) Your neighboring teeth will leading to spacing, cavities, and gum disease
3) Your remianing teeth will work harder causing more wear and breakage
4) Your muscles of your jaw will work differently to compensate for changes in your bite
5) Missing teeth change support for your smile and lower face leading to a sunken in appearance

Millions of Americans are missing teeth

According to the American College of Prosthodontics:
More than 36 million Americans do not have any teeth, and 120 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth. These numbers are expected to grow in the next two decades.
Tooth loss happens from decay and gums disease, and as a result of injury, cancer, or simply wear.
Edentulism affects our most vulnerable populations – the aging and the economically disadvantaged.
In the geriatric population the ratio of edentulous individuals is 2 to 1. About 23 million are completely edentulous and about 12 million are edentulous in one arch.
90 percent of those who suffer from edentulism have dentures.
The number of partially edentulous patients will continue to increase in the next 15 years to more than 200 million individuals. Partial edentulism affects the majority of adult Americans.
Consequences of missing teeth include significant nutritional changes, obesity, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and some forms of cancer. More than 36 million Americans do not have any teeth, and 120 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth. These numbers are expected to grow in the next two decades.

There are many options available to replacing missing teeth including implants, fixed bridges, removable partials and dentures

Dr Neal can go over these options with you and help you have a beautiful healthy smile at Crystal Lake Dental Associates

Last week it was reported that actress Demi Moore had lost her two front teeth because of stress. Experts have said that the number one cause of tooth loss is gum disease, of which stress can be a factor. Here are 7 other ways stress could be taking it's toll on your teeth..

1. Translucent teeth
"If you notice that your teeth are becoming translucent or getting shorter this may be due to Bruxism (grinding) of the teeth. You should see your dentist as you may need a bite guard to protect the teeth from wearing further."

2. Achy jaw
"If you feel an ache or clicking in your jaw joint this may be a sign of stress. Seek advice from your dentist and you may need a treatment for the jaw, such as a special splint or even Botox to relax the muscle."

3. Bleeding gums
"If you notice your gums are bleeding more this can be a sign of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), which can be caused or exacerbated by stress. See your dentist and you may need some gum treatment such as deep cleaning (root planing) under the gums."

4. Dental abscesses
"Dental abscesses can be caused as during times of stress your body can be unable to fight of gum infections. Seek advice from your dentist and you may need antibiotics or further treatment for this."

5. Root canal problems
Root canal problems can be caused by stress if the grinding becomes so severe that the nerves of the teeth are exposed. Root canal treatment may then be needed to remove the nerve from the teeth.

6. Bad breath
Bad breath can be a sign of stress. Stomach acids can build during times of stress and lead to reflux and other compounds that causes bad breath. You will need to see your GP for this and may need treatment with antacids or other medication. This may even require further investigation of the stomach lining."

7. Cheek biting
"Cheek biting is a sign of stress. For some people this is a habit that is developed to cope with stress. Acupuncture or hypnosis are some of the treatments that can be used to help relax and prevent this.

8. Shortened teeth
Shortening of teeth is a symptom of bruxism (tooth grinding). This most often occurs at night called “sleep bruxism”. Sleep bruxism has also been associated with Obstructive sleep apnea. It can also occur in the daytime during times of increased stress.

9. Broken teeth and broken fillings
Clenching of teeth at night or in the daytime will bend teeth and fracture them and any fillings in them. This can lead to the need for fillings, crowns, root canals, and tooth loss over time if not corrected.

Laser detection of metals

A new study may have found a way to isolate genetics from environmental contributors to autism, allowing researchers to focus on the link between heavy metal levels and autism risk. The research was led by Manish Arora, PhD, an environmental scientist and dentist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, NY, and the findings were published in the journal Nature Communications.

Such studies have had to approximate the toxic metal exposure based on the metal concentrations in the bloodstream. However, this estimation was done after the children had already been diagnosed with ASD, rather than before.

Previous studies were not able to account for genetic factors that may have influenced the results; generally, separating environmental factors from genetic ones in the development of autism is challenging for researchers.

The method used in this new study manages to bypass many of these limitations. By looking at naturally shed baby teeth, the researchers explain, they have access to information that goes as far back as a baby’s prenatal life. And by studying twins, Prof Arora and colleagues were able to separate genetic influences from environmental ones.

To determine how much metal the babies’ bodies contained before and after birth, the researchers used lasers to analyse the growth rings on the babies’ teeth.

Laser technology allowed the scientists to accurately extract specific layers of dentine, which is the substance that lies beneath the tooth enamel.

In much the same way that we can tell the age of a tree by looking at the growth rings in a cross-section of its trunk, the scientists were able to see different developmental stages correspond to different rings by looking at a cross-section of the babies’ teeth.

This correspondence between growth dentine layers, their levels of lead, and the exposure to lead during different developmental stages, has been previously demonstrated by Prof Arora and team in research they carried out previously.

Cindy Lawler, PhD, head of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Genes, Environment, and Health Branch, explains the importance of using this scientific method for studying autism:

“We think autism begins very early, most likely in the womb, and research suggests that our environment can increase a child’s risk. But by the time children are diagnosed at age 3 or 4, it’s hard to go back and know what the moms were exposed to. With baby teeth, we can actually do that.”

The study revealed that children with ASD had much higher levels of lead throughout their development.

The greatest difference between lead levels in children with ASD and children without was noticed during the period after birth.

Zinc levels, on the other hand, displayed a more complex pattern. During the prenatal period, children with ASD had lower levels of zinc, but after birth, these levels increased to higher levels than those found in children without ASD.

Finally, manganese was found to correlate with ASD as well. Children with ASD seemed to have less manganese than children without, both pre- and postnatally.

Overall, the study suggests that either prenatal exposure to heavy metals, or the body’s ability to process them, may influence the chances of developing autism.

“A lot of studies have compared current lead levels in kids that are already diagnosed,” Lawler says. “[But] being able to measure something the children were exposed to long before diagnosis is a major advantage.”

David Balshaw, PhD, head of the NIEHS Exposure, Response, and Technology Branch, also weighs in on the scientific method used for this study, saying, “There is growing excitement about the potential of baby teeth as a rich record of a child’s early life exposure to both helpful and harmful factors in the environment.”

Prof Arora called the method “a window into our fetal life.” He and his colleagues note, however, that more large-scale studies are needed to replicate and confirm their findings.
7) Tooth Wear
8) Chipping of front teeth
9) Breaking of back teeth
10) Gum Disease
11) Cavities
12) Root Canals
13) Missing Teeth
14) Gum Recession and Sensitivity
15) Food Packing and Bad Breath
Myth Buster #3... Invisalign is only for simple adult cases.

1) Invisalign works great on simple cases where only a few aligners are needed and is the preferred method of making minor corrections.

2) Invisalign has evolved quite a bit and works well on complicated cases.

Dental Implants are a great move forward in dental health. When first introduced in the 1960's they began a long slow journey into the daily art of dental care. Dental implant have evolved over the decades and are continuing to do so. Cosmetic advances and new materials are having a tremendous impact in people's lives.

Dental Implant are not teeth and a healthy implant will never decay of need root canal treatment.

Dental implants are imbeded in the jawbone and emerge through the gums where bacteria can attack. What we are finding is that a form of gum disease like periodontal disease can have a very detrimental effect on the health of an implant.

proper pre planning of an implant site prior to placement as well as the health and hygiene of the patient are key to success. Dental implants must b meticulously cared for and cleaned along regular dental checkups are essential.

While a patient may be very healthy when an implant is first placed, it is likely that in time a person could develop certain conditions like diabetes and others which may lead to higher incidence of infections and slower healing.

Early diagnosis of implant mucositis (reversable gum inflamation around an implant), or peri-implantitis can lead to a good outcome. Late detection is much more difficult to manage. Loss of an implant, of involved reparative care can be frustrating for the patient.

The use of dental implants has revolutionized the treatment of partially and fully edentulous patients today. Implants have become a treatment approach for managing a broad range of clinical dilemmas due to their high level of predictability and their ability to be used for a wide variety of treatment options. While in many cases dental implants have been reported to achieve long-term success, they are not immune from complications associated with improper treatment planning, surgical and prosthetic execution, material failure, and maintenance. Included in the latter are the biologic complications of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, inflammatory conditions in the soft and hard tissues at dental implants. It is the purpose of this paper to review the current knowledge concerning peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis to aid clinicians in their diagnoses and prevention. It is recognized that new information will continue to emerge, and as such, this document represents a dynamic endeavor that will evolve and require further expansion and reevaluation.

Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis differ with respect to treatment. To date, evidence suggests that peri-implant mucositis can be successfully treated if detected early and when combined with effective nonsurgical efforts.6,7 Non-surgical therapy has not been shown to be effective for the treatment of peri-implantitis.2,68,72 Currently, different surgical treatment modalities have been proposed and have shown promising results.16,73-77 However, long-term controlled studies are needed to validate which treatment modality may be optimal, given the different clinical scenarios. It has been suggested, as with many inflammatory diseases, that the earlier the diagnosis and intervention, the better the treatment outcome. To that end, routine monitoring of dental implants as a part of a comprehensive periodontal evaluation and maintenance is essential.

Parents often ask me when their child should have their first dental visit. My answer may surprose you.

First a little background.

I) Dental care is mandated by state laws and the Affordable Care Act

Children are required to make a dental visit in my state before entering certain grades in school. In addition, the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare if you prefer) mandates that all children have dental insurance coverage.

II) Many times the first visit for children is an emergency

This is because parents may not think of taking their child to the dentist till the child has fallen and injured a tooth, has a toothache, or they see a spot on a tooth. Pediatricians, who will be seeing the child right after birth, have never been taught about early dental care and the need for it.

III) The best time for an infant to visit the dentist is around the age of 6 months.

Why see the dentist so early in life?

We wish meet several objectives with early and regular visits

First, we want to establish a positive and healthy relationship with a child right away. Often irrational fears arise from a painful first emergency dental appointment, horror stories from other family members etc. In addition unpleasant visits to other doctors for vaccinations can color a child's perceptions of "doctor offices" perceptions for a lifetime. One early painful visit to a dentist or doctor often have people afraid for the rest of their lives.

Second, we want to insure that healthy hygiene (cleaning) habits for the child's teeth, gums are established right away with the child and parent. we will teach how to clean a child's teeth with and instill a regular routine right away.

Third, we want to help the parents develop good diet, and other habits for the child before damage is done. These include proper use of pacifiers, and contents of bottles of fluid given to the child, and managing harmful habits like thumb and finger sucking.

Fourth, tracking growth and development of the teeth and jaws and any abnormal growth patterns are noted as well as any advised interceptive treatment recommendations.

As you can see there s a lot going on in a growing infant that parents may not be aware of. Early preventive and interceptive care helps prevent fears, and more problematic dental issues as well as keeping cost down in the long run.

We’re often afraid of what we don’t know, which is one reason why it is so important to introduce your child to dentistry and good oral health habits as early as possible. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that your child’s first dental visit occur when the first tooth appears or by his or her first birthday at the latest. Choosing the right dentist for your child at this crucial stage of development is essential for ensuring a positive relationship with dentistry and a lifetime of healthy smiles.

We asked the experts at Cambridge Pediatric Dental Associates for some tips for parents to help children become comfortable with dental visits and develop confident attitudes toward their dental health. Here are a few tips to help make your child’s dental experiences happy ones.

Find the right "dental home" for you and your child.

Dr. George McEachern, CPDA’s founder, suggests focusing on finding a long-term "dental home" for your child—a practice your child can grow up with. Children are less fearful of people and places they have become familiar with.

So, for you, it’s all about partnering with a team you trust, and for your child it’s about finding a place they’ll feel safe and comfortable going to for years to come.

Dr. McEachern highly suggests selecting a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dental specialists have had two additional years of training and are staffed with team members dedicated to the unique needs associated with children’s dental care. Many have also studied child psychology, which helps them communicate and interact with their patients in ways that foster relationships and make visits enjoyable for children, rather than scary.

Additionally, pediatric dental offices are generally designed with children’s comfort in mind. Look for waiting rooms that are colorful, engaging, and stocked with toys, stuffed animals, books, and doodle boards to entertain children. This way, the dentist becomes a place children look forward to visiting.

Ask about what happens during early visits and explain it to your child.

First visits to the dentist are more introductory in nature and geared to provide positive experiences. Early exams usually just involve simple demonstrations of things like tooth brushing—something kids are already used to doing at home. Through these interactions, the dentist determines what the young patient is most comfortable with and slowly introduces additional procedures such as cleanings and full exams.

Kids seem to learn better from the show-and-tell technique that many pediatric dentists employ. Dr. Fatima Aziz, a former patient at CPDA, is now a dental associate at the practice. Before an initial exam, she puts her young patients at ease by showing them pictures and explaining what to expect. She demonstrates on Dentoform® stuffed animals and teaches about dental instruments by using friendly names such as the Tooth Tickler, Mister Thirsty and Bubble Maker. Everything is focused on making the experience entertaining and informative. At her office, kids can even test the instruments on balloons made from dental gloves to show them there’s nothing to be afraid of.

Dr. Aziz says she fondly remembers choosing a "prize" after her visits to the dentist as a child, and she offers her patients the same opportunity. She knows how picking out a special sticker or trinket or getting a new toothbrush can make visiting the dentist fun for kids. Plus, the positive reinforcement helps children create positive memories of their early dental visits.

Learn tips and tricks to use at home.

Pediatric dentists and hygienists are a fantastic source of information about children’s oral healthcare. Remember that you and your pediatric dental team are a partnership with the primary goal of keeping your child healthy, so don’t be afraid to ask for guidance! They can suggest products, show you how much toothpaste to use, and give advice on helping your child enjoy brushing and stay engaged in their oral health care at home.

They can also offer dietary counseling and guidance that can benefit your child’s overall oral and systemic health, such as which snacks are more cavity causing than others and when (and how) to start breaking habits like thumb-sucking and the use of pacifiers. Staying involved and establishing good oral health practices at home will result in better visits to the dentist, which benefit everyone.

Know what emergency oral care is available in your child’s dental home.

As many parents of toddlers soon discover, these new movers and shakers are especially prone to tumbles and injuries as they master gross motor skills. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, many of these injuries affect the mouth. To be prepared, it is important to consider what type of emergency oral care is available through the pediatric dentist you choose. Some offices, including CPDA, have an on-call doctor available via telephone after hours—since kids and accidents aren’t on an office schedule!

It’s never too early to begin reinforcing positive oral health care habits with your child. Good pediatric dental care can result in a positive attitude about going to the dentist and, subsequently, a lifetime of healthy smiles!

The tooth is part of a preserved skeleton of a 25-year-old man found in Northern Italy in 1988. Scientists determined he lived about 14,000 years ago — during the Upper Paleolithic Age or the late Stone Age.

According to recent analysis, the ancient tooth showed signs of having been cleaned with flint tools. The findings suggest that someone tried to dig out the rotten part of the tooth with stone.

So yes, even cavemen had cavities — and they also went through painful procedures to get rid of them.

What does tooth decay and acid erosion look like?

Erosion, Acid Reflux (GERD), Bulemia (Eating Disorders), and Your Teeth

Enamel is generally a semi-opaque off-white color, and slightly rough when it first comes into the mouth. Acid from bacterial plaque can cause white and brown/black spots to show up on the teeth.Erosion makes the enamel quite shinny and smooth. As time goes on the teeth become more yellow due the loss of this semi opaque layer exposing the dentine underneath which is yellow/orange.Once the dentin layer is exposed, the loss of tooth surface accelerates because the dentin layer is much softer that enamel.

What does acid do to teeth?

Your enamel (the hard white outer layer) on your teeth is comprised primarily of Calcium and Phosphorous, These elements are actually considered metals. Metals are susceptible to dissolving by acid.

Where does this Acid come from?

Foods and drinks can contain acid. Acetic acid in vinegar, phosphoric acid in soda drinks, and citric acid in many fruits are the most common sources. Another source are stomach acid. Bacteria in your mouth break down sugars and starches in our foods to create lactic acid.

How common is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is the most common common communicable disease on earth, the bacteria is passed from family members to infants shortly after birth. These bacteria continue to inhabit the mouth and stick to teeth in a film called plaque. Bacteria from family members can be different strains from one person to another. Depending on the strains of bacteria one is infected with the person can be more or less prone to acid formation. The more sugary and starchy foods a person consumes, the more acid that these bacteria can produce. Essentially the longer sugars and starches remain in the mouth, the more acid is produced.

How Common is Tooth Damage from Acidic Foods?

This varies by how one eats and drinks acidic foods. People who drink a lot of acidic foods like orange juice and grapefruit juice and soda may experience erosion over time. Another factor is how a person drinks these substances. If someone uses a straw and swallows quickly, the acid effect will be minimal to none. However, if a person swishes the liquid in the mouth, there is more acid in contact with the teeth and there will me more erosion.

How common is Acid Reflux (GERD)?

Acid Reflux is becoming more and more common as people age. For some reason as we get older, our bodies can overproduce too much acid and the natural valve in our throat can become less efficient allowing this excess acid to back up into the throat and mouth when laying down. In addition, the population is becoming more obese. Obese people have more weight on thir airway when laying down and larger tongues and other tissues in the back of the throat. The combination leads to airway obstruction and poor breathing at night. When someone is laying down and having difficulty getting air in to breath, they begin to choke and literally suck acidic stomach fluid into their throat and mouth. this acidic condition will erode(dissolve) the teeth.

How common is Bulemia (Eating Disorder)?

this condition is more common than we can determine. It has two forms. One is a physiologic form that has to do with tough and biology. We all know that many women will have morning sickness which leads to bouts of vomiting, Other people are what we call gaggers, or prople with very sensitive digestive systems. These people often have difficulty keeping food down and will often vomit after eating, or an incident that triggers an episode of gagging. The other form is a psychological form of vomiting related to self image and some form or exaggerated need to lose weight or keep weight off. Bulemia really became common after the popularity of very slender models who gained tremendous exposure in the media (ie. Twiggy in the late 60's). This form is usually seen in women and teenagers dealing with some trauma, or depressive incidents in the past. Sadly, rarely will these individuals admit to the act of forced vomiting and they do everything possible to hide their actions. When confronted with the suspicion of it, they can withdraw and become rather argumentative in denial until they are "ready for help"'.

What other factors can influence Acid Erosion?

Other factors that can effect acid erosion include, lower saliva flow, para functional habits and, oral hygiene, As we age, our saliva flow is reduced and this saliva is an acid buffer for the foods and drink, In addition there are thousands of medications that reduce salive flow when taken which again reduces the buffering capacity. Parafunctional habits like tooth clenching and grinding have an added effect of crushing the teeth that are already softened by acid attack. Poor oral hygiene will leave the acids from bacterial plaque on the teeth longer. Not using a fluoride rinse or toothpaste or having regular fluoride treatments by a dentist will also keep the teeth more prone to all forms of acid attack as fluoride hardens the enamel.

In Conclusion

When teeth first come into the mouth, they have a certain amount of enamel that will only decrease over time from wear and acid attack. Your dentist can advise you if any of these forms or acid attack are occuring. Intervention through testing, diet modification, habit changes, medications, and certain preventive hygiene procedures are all methods to ensure that your teeth stay bright, and strong thorough your lifetime. See your dentist regularly and follow the advice given.

Why are Primary Teeth Important?

Primary teeth serve as the bridge between no teeth and a full set of perminant teeth. Immediately after birth, an infant begins getting nutrition through nursing using a suckling technique, the muscles are not mature yet and the throat has not develop te completely. This suckling/swallowing method works well while muscles and structures develop and mature. At about 6 months, teeth begin erupting into the tiny jaws and the stronger muscles can begin processing bits of food. As the child continues to grow till about age two, the remaining primary teeth erupt into space. The tongue and jaws are growing stronger and larger and the child can now chew food efficiently and swallow it. The pri,are teeth will continue to work until they begin to be replaced by their perminant teeth at about age six. A child's ability to comfortably and efficiently eat, and speak, as well as feel socially acceptable are enhanced by a healthy complete set of primary teeth.

They Are Just Baby Teeth, Why The big Deal?

The primary teeth play a role in many areas of proper growth and development and need to be taken care of for several reasons listed below:

They help a child get maximum nutrition by chewing the food prior to swallowing

Cavities (tooth decay, or caries) can lead to painful and dangerous abscesses

Premature loss of teeth can be disfiguring and lead to social issues for children

Primary teeth are placeholders for the permanent teeth infections or early loss can lead to developmental problems and need for braces and surgery later

Proper hygiene and regular dental visits early in life leads to better life habits

Painful

emergency visits due to dental problems not addressed early lead many people to become dental phobics as adults with significant fears and avoidance behaviors which can be devastating physically, socially, and emotionally.

Speech patterns can be unaddressed affected by dental problems in children.

What Should Parents Do?

Parents should take their child to visit the dentist as soon as the first tooth arrives or by the child's first birthday. The child and parent can then establish a positives and healthy relationship very early on. In addition the dentist can help the parent develop goot diet and hygiene practices right away. Early visits allow the dentist to be alert for any growth and development issues early.
